How Much Does It Cost to Build a Healthcare Mobile App?

This is one of the first questions every founder asks, and the honest answer is the one nobody likes: it depends. Of course, "it depends" is not actually helpful, so let's dig into the math and see what actually drives these numbers.

Since we build healthcare apps for a living, we can confirm that the cost of a healthcare app is almost never about the features you can see. It is about everything under the hood.

Why healthcare apps cost more than consumer apps

A consumer app and a patient-facing healthcare app can have nearly identical user interfaces and wildly different price tags.

The difference is the invisible work: HIPAA compliance, secure infrastructure, audit logging, encryption, BAAs, integrations with electronic health record (EHR) systems, and the documentation required to prove all of it add up to a meaningful share of the budget.

So what number are you looking at?

A reasonable rule of thumb is that compliance and infrastructure overhead add somewhere between 20 and 50 percent on top of what the equivalent non-regulated app would cost.

The major cost drivers

A few factors move the number more than anything else:

1. Platform scope. A single platform (iOS or Android) is cheaper than both. A companion web app on top of that adds more. Cross-platform frameworks like React Native or Flutter can reduce this cost, but they are not always the right call for a variety of reasons.
2. Integrations. Connecting to an EHR like Epic or Cerner, a lab network, a pharmacy system, or a payments processor is rarely trivial. Each integration brings its own technical learning curve, credentialing process, and testing burden. Integrations are one of the most consistently underestimated line items we see.
3. Compliance depth. A wellness app that stores no PHI is a different animal from a telehealth platform handling clinical data. The deeper into regulated territory you go, the more security architecture, documentation, and testing you need.
4. Design and user experience. Healthcare apps often serve users who are older, stressed, or managing a chronic condition. Designing for genuine accessibility and clarity is not a luxury here. It directly affects adoption and outcomes.
5. Ongoing maintenance. The app does not stop costing money at launch. Security patches, OS updates, dependency upgrades, and monitoring are recurring costs, and ignoring them is how a compliant app slowly becomes a non-compliant one.

Ballpark costs

With the caveat that every project is different, here is how we tend to see healthcare app budgets (not including ongoing maintenance) break down:

• A focused MVP with a narrow feature set and minimal integrations typically lands in the lower-to-mid range of custom development budgets. Ballpark: $50,000-$150,000
• A full patient-facing app with EHR integration, secure messaging, and a provider-facing component sits considerably higher. Ballpark: $200,000-$500,000.
• An enterprise-grade platform with multiple integrations, high availability requirements, and formal compliance attestations is a different conversation entirely. Ballpark: $500,000-$3,000,000.

We deliberately avoid quoting hard dollar figures in a blog post, because a number without context does more harm than good, but these ranges will give you an idea of what you're getting into when developing a healthcare app.

What we can tell you is that the cheapest bid is almost never the cheapest project: cutting corners on architecture and compliance early on inevitably leads to expensive rework down the road, a pattern we have written about before.

The single most effective way to manage budget is to start with a well-scoped MVP.

Validate the core value of your product with real users before investing in the long tail of features. Write a clear specifications document so you are not paying your development team to guess. And work with a partner who has built in healthcare before, because the expensive surprises in this space are the ones that come from inexperience.
